Summer Reading

School-wide Summer Read and

Honors Classes Additional Assignments

In an effort to continue to build the literacy of our students, North Shore Technical High School will, once again, require all students to participate in a school-wide summer read.  We are also asking our teaching faculty, support staff and administrators to participate, as well.

Our selection this year comes with two different versions.  All incoming 9th graders are assigned the young adult version and all 10th, 11th and 12th graders are encouraged to read the adult version which is, obviously, more challenging.  Both books contain the same story.

Grade 9:                    Discovering Wes Moore  by Wes Moore

Grades 10, 11, 12:     The Other Wes Moore   by Wes Moore

This book delivers a powerful message which can be utilized throughout the year across all disciplines and supports the transition to the Common Core Curriculum, which advocates both the reading of non-fiction and themes of diversity.

We are requiring all students to have read one versions of the book before the start of school.  An assessment will be administered during the first week of school and it will count as a quiz in ALL of the following areas:

  •  English
  •  Mathematics
  •  Science
  •  Social Studies
  •  Spanish
  •  Physical Education and Health
  •  CTE Related – Grades 10, 11 and 12

As students read The Other Wes Moore, it is important that they recognize the two characters, both named Wes Moore, and how they are different. Our English teachers encourage students to develop a chart or brief notes identifying each character and how each Wes Moore’s experiences shaped his decisions, as students will be writing an essay in English classes based on their reading.

Barnes & Noble (North Shore Shopping Center – Peabody) has ordered copies of the books and will order more, as needed.  Books may also be ordered online at and and are available for Nook and Kindle readers as well.  Get your copy early; don’t wait until late summer.  A limited number of copies of both versions of the Wes Moore book will be available at North Shore Tech to be borrowed during the summer.  If you are interested in signing out a copy, please call 978-762-0001, in advance, to set up a time to pick up the book.

Additional summer reading assignments for Honors English students

Students should be prepared to discuss the content and write about themes associated with the additional book. All have common themes or characterization with The Other Wes Moore, which all students attending North Shore Technical High School are reading this summer. Honors students in grades 10-12 read one additional title, and should keep a reader’s journal to reflect on the author’s purpose for the respective work they are reading.
