The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program that operates with in all school systems. It provides nutritionally balanced, low cost or free meals to students each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. Today all the talk is about the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010′s revised Meal Pattern Plan. What does this mean to North Shore Tech’s students, staff and families? It means that our school cafeteria will be meeting tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that they are healthy, well-balanced and provide students with all the nutrition they need to succeed here at the Tech.

Starting last school year (2012 -2013), North Shore Tech’s school menus will be designed to meet the new daily and weekly minimum and maximums for calories, proteins, fats, sodium, grains/breads, fruits, vegetables and milk. All school lunches served must meet additional standards including:

  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce with their meals)
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green, red/orange, and beans & legumes
  • Fat-free white or chocolate milk or 1% white milk
  • More whole grains
  •  Less saturated fat
  • And less sodium

We’re always working to offer students smarter and healthier choices. There will be some exciting new food items on the menu which we encourage everyone to try. Although our meals have to meet these new requirements, we still try to accommodate the special dietary requests of our students and staff when planning our menus. Some of the new nutritional offerings are sandwiches made on Gluten Free breads, made with Boar’s Head Gluten Free Meats and Cheese products which are all natural with no artificial ingredients. Boars Head products are also low in sodium and have no nitrates, MSG, Trans Fats or preservatives added. If your child has a food, milk or dairy allergy, please contact the food service director to make arrangements for their meals. A la carte items such as milk, juice, water and low calorie snacks off the “Nutritional A LIST” are available for purchase in the cafeteria. There is also cold water available all day long in the cafeteria for free.

School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families too! Breakfast is available daily for only $2.75 and Lunch is available daily for only $3.50. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose healthy school meals!

As a reminder, our cafeteria registers are computerized as part of the Nutrikids POS System. All students and staff are assigned a unique 10 number ID which will be scanned in at the registers to purchase meals. Deposits can also be made on-line through mySchoolBucks.com. (Please click on the link to create an account -* **Please note allow 3 -5 business days for this to be added into your child’s school lunch account ***). You may also send in a check or cash to the cafeteria to be added to your child’s school lunch account. Any questions please contact the cafeteria at 978-762-0001 ext. 295.

Thanks again for all your participation and support in our programs. We look forward to welcoming your children to our cafeteria.

Sincerely,

North Shore Tech Cafeteria Staff
